It’s a no-brainer that fruits are brimming with good-for-you nutrients.
Summer is an ideal time to add them to your diet; they provide health benefits you may not even know about. “Fruits at any time of year are an excellent addition to a person’s diet. In the summer, fruits are most plentiful,” says Alix B. Landman, a registered dietitian based in Plantation. “Fruits are rich in phytonutrients that protect us from disease. Think about eating the rainbow of colors that fruits provide for a diverse amount of nutrients.”
Landman says that you should eat one to five fruits a day, depending on your health goals. “Knowing the amount to eat of each of the various fruits help keep the carbohydrates and calories in check.”
The next time you visit the grocery store or farmers market, grab one of these summery fruits.
Strawberries — 1 cup has 15 grams of carbs and 60 calories
This nutritious fruit is brimming with antioxidants, which help lower your chronic disease risk. Plus, they contain potassium, folate, manganese and vitamin C. Since they’re about 92% water, they’ll keep you hydrated, too. Landman says to watch your strawberry intake if you have a histamine intolerance. That means your body doesn’t break down the histamine you eat, which can lead to allergic symptoms.
Watermelon — 1.25 cups has 15 grams of carbs and 60 calories
This juicy and refreshing summer fruit offers vitamins A and C, fiber and lycopene (which is linked to a lowered risk of certain cancers). Water is the main ingredient in this low-calorie treat, so it will help flush out toxins and keep you feeling full.
Pineapple — ¾ cup has 15 grams of carbs and 60 calories
Feel like you’re in the tropics as you munch on a juicy pineapple slice. It’s loaded with bromelain, an anti-inflammatory that’s been found to decrease inflammation. (Note that this fruit also has high histamine levels.)
Blueberries — 1 cup has 15 grams of carbs and 60 calories
For being such a tiny berry, blueberries pack a punch. They’re loaded with fiber, which will help keep you full. Plus, they protect you from illness thanks to their immune-enhancing properties and they hold anthocyanin, which is linked to bettering brain power.
